Weighing Scale Manufacturer

Client Case Study

Background

This company was a specialist manufacturer of retail food weighing scales, used by the likes of Tesco, and Asda, at their food preparation facilities.

IT Results were approached back in 2007, as a result of on-going issues with their IT infrastructure, which were not being addressed by their existing IT support London team.

Consequently, we ended up taking over the running of their IT systems, up until the business was sold to a competitor, in 2018.

Some of the ways that we assisted the business are summarised below:

Pay As You Go IT Support

The company employed approximately 10 staff, working from their offices in Twickenham, London.

Upon our first attendance to the company offices, we inspected the IT infrastructure, and spoke to members of staff about various issues with the system. The general consensus was that the network was under-performing, which was due to a combination of factors, including an old server, out of date workstations, and an old network switch.

In order to resolve the performance issues with the company's IT systems, we implemented the following solutions:

 New Dell Server

We installed a new Dell server with a RAID 1 disc configuration. We chose Windows 2008 SBS Edition, so that the company could make use of the bundled Microsoft Exchange module.

 Gigabit Switch

The existing network switch was very old, running at 10/100mb, and giving poor performance. To resolve this, we implemented an HP Gigabit switch, which improved throughput substantially.

 PC / Laptop Upgrades

Several of the company's PC's and laptops were relatively new, but lacking in performance, largely due to the use of mechanical hard drives. We resolved this by upgrading the machines with SSD drives and additional RAM.

 New Workstations

Several members of staff required new desktop machines for designing the retail food weighing systems. Consequently, we specified and implemented 2 new Dell Workstations, capable of running the latest AutoCAD software.

Email System Support

Microsoft Exchange Image

The company was already a user of Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook 2007 when we joined them.

Hence, upon implementing the new SBS 2008 server, we migrated all users to Exchange, 2007. We also implemented Outlook 2010 on all users' desktop machines.

Whilst Exchange 2007 possessed some spam filtering capabilities, a more resilient solution was sought. Therefore, we implemented a SpamTitan Cloud mail service to help prevent any malware from reaching the internal mail system.

With regard to mobile email, the company was a heavy Blackberry user, but had not implemented the corporate email facilities on any of its phones.

Consequently, as part of the new server upgrade, we installed Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), allowing users to get their Exchange emails and calendar appointments on their mobile devices.

Small Business Websites

The company made use of several web-related services for which we provided the following support:

Website

The website was designed by a third party, with us provide technical assistance / troubleshooting any back-end issues, as and when required.

Domain Names

The company had several domain names that we administered on their behalf, including the processing of renewals, as and when required.

DNS Hosting

We administered all internal and external DNS records for the company, including those required for web hosting and email delivery.

Cyber Security Services

As part of our remit, we introduced various Cyber security solutions to help protect the internal network, and data, from internal and external threats:

Anti Virus

We implemented the very latest Symantec Endpoint Protection software, in order to protect all the workstations, laptops, and server, from possible virus attacks.

Firewall

We installed a Draytek Firewall / ADSL Router, to handle all the company's web and VPN traffic, making changes to the configuration, as and when required.

Backup Solution

We implemented Backup Exec 2010, with all data and Exchange emails backed up to several external hard drives, rotated on a daily basis, for security purposes.

Passwords

All users were required to have secure passwords for accessing the Windows domain, VPN connections, and emails on their Blackberry devices.

Windows Patching

As part of our weekly audit, we would check the server to ensure it had the latest Microsoft Windows updates, along with any new drivers from Dell.

Mobile Device Support

As previously discussed, the company was a heavy user of Blackberry technology, with us providing configuration, and support, for all handsets.

We implemented a Blackberry Enterprise Server instance, linked to the Exchange server, so that users could receive work emails on their devices.

During the latter stages of our involvement, Blackberry phones started to become less popular, so we switched the company to using Android phones, syncing their mail using Exchange ActiveSync.

As regards Exchange, one feature lacking from the software was a group calendar, allowing engineers to see each others' movements. We resolved this by setting up a system from a company called CodeTwo, allowing individuals calendars to sync to a central group calendar.

Internet Connection Support

With regards to telecoms support, we were responsible for the specifying and implementation of an ADSL 2+ broadband line, along with the configuration of a Draytek router, enabled for VPN termination, which we subsequently used to monitor the network and repair any machines.

We also acted as the liaison with the ISP, dealing with any broadband issues and upgrades, as and when required.
